We left our Yorktown, VA anchorage on Thursday morning and motored (it seems every time we try to sail, the wind is on our nose and we don't have time to tack to get where we want to go) to Tangier Island, VA where we spent Thursday and Friday docked at Parks Marina on Tangier Island, VA, which sits in the middle of Chesapeake Bay. The island is as close to the "real deal" as one can find today. It's a true fishing village with crabbing boats and crab traps galore. In recent years it has become a bit of a tourist attraction with only 4 or 5 small restaurants and a couple of gift shops. Fortunately for us, it was the off season and hardly any tourists were present. There are almost no motor vehicles on the island, except for motor scooters and many golf carts. Many of the island folks speak an unusual dialect similar to a cross between English and Old English. We docked the 2 nights at the only marina, Parks, run by Mr Parks who claimed to be 82 years old. He said he spent 41 winters with the drag boats in the Chesapeake. Then he explained that a drag boat is now outlawed for crabbing. A drag boat was used to pull a drag, similar to the way they fish for oysters in TX, to gather crabs. It was a very interesting place and I hope you enjoy the pictures.
Not a good picture, but it's the full moon rising:
PS: Nancy's brother John is going to help her rent her house, as he lives close by, so she has decided not to fly back to AR at the end of September. This means we don't have to make the 300 mile run to Wilmington, NC by September 30. So, we hope to slow way down and take our time heading back south. This should allow us to relax and enjoy our trip even more. The weather up this way has become very pretty fall weather and the daytime temperatures are very pleasant, with nights in the high 50's. Of course, before too long it will be cold here so we plan to follow the warmer weather back into SC and maybe even the FL Keys. Only time will tell!!!!
