We left Monday morning,,early, and made a timed bridge opening heading in Portsmouth, VA. Our ICW guide had said we would be in for a culture shock after being on the ICW in the remote parts of GA, SC & NC. We were! The commercial traffic was a little heavy as we entered the area and each time we pasted a Navy ship in the boat yard or at the Norfolk base, we were shadowed by a gun boat, always staying between us and the ships. I guess we look like a couple of terrorists!! We crossed over the Bay Tunnel and the end of the Bay Bridge and turned north into the Chesapeake. The sails went up smoothly and we enjoyed a short sail before the winds were right off our nose and dropped below 5 knots. So, we dropped the sails and motored on toward our destination. It was fortunate we dropped the sails because before too long the clouds rolled in and the wind picked up to 20 knots with gusts to 28. Needless to say it was rough motoring to a place where we could duck into a smaller bay and find some protection. This place was about 2 to 2-1/2 hours of motoring. When we did find an anchorage, it was still unprotected from the north east wind and we spend a tough night rocking and rolling in the heavy winds. First thing this morning, we moved across the bay and found a little better protection. Since the winds are still high, we decided to sit out a day on anchor and catch up on things we've been missing. If the weather clears in a day or so, we would like to sail on up to Tangier Island, which is a fishing village sitting in the middle of the bay. If it doesn't, I guess we'll turn south and start the trip back.

I hope you enjoy the pictures and a couple of videos.

How did you control your boat with the waves that high? I would have been seasick on one end of me and down on the other end clothes and all would have been thrown over board. I would have been screaming so loud, the Navy would have come running, thinking 2 terrorists had me!!Can you really believe you are doing all this or is it like a dream??
